New Feature: Music Demos

Now the music page contains short demos in a flash player that will be switched out every so often by me. These songs showcase my ability to write for all genres, instrumentations, etc. The music catalogue is still intact.

New Project: SchemeInk

This is a summer research project I worked on at Grinnell College. The goal was to write a Scheme scripting console for the open source vector graphics editor Inkscpape. In two months, TinyScheme (an interpreter of Scheme) was linked into a visual console, and the Inkscape base was encorporated into the TinyScheme interpreter. Therefore, the user could then open a dialog and enter Scheme code to effect what was drawn on the screen. Finally, we created neat little functions to show off the potential off the console.

New Project: Air Hockey

This is a flash recreation of Air Hockey in the style of Mega Man. After fighting each opponent, you gain a special power which can be used as a strength against another opponent. It started out as pong, and then developed to a mix between airhockey and pong, and then moved fully to airhockey. Then I thought airhockey was boring, so I added in some bosses. Finally, I thought that wasn't good enough so I added another hidden game using the same engine. So, I apologize if this game seems like I didn't plan it because I pretty much winged the entire thing. Only play this game if you're in for a challenge. Hopefully, one day I'll add online multiplayer and more music. I'm sure there are plenty of glitches too. Just in case something bad happens (especially in the easy physics mode), try pausing and switching to real physics. This also might be a neat strategy. I never really was able to figure out how to do contact physics, so if someone knows how to improve that, please let me know. Enjoy!

New Song: String-Quartet

This piece was written in 2006. It was the final composition I wrote for my advanced composition class. The requirement was a piece for string-quartet between 4-7 minutes. Mine turned out to be around 6:30, but the recording went a little slower so now don't yell at me for it being 8 minutes. The piece is entitled String-Quartet (lame) but has 3 separate movements which are all embeded below and are titled: I) Reaction, II) E.K.G, and III) Requiem. The piece is about when I first heard about the problem with my Grandfather that has led doctors to the conclusion that he would died in 3 months. What bothered me the most was the fact that he could actually have surgery to live a couple more years, but he chose not to, due to the fact that dying this way would be a painless death. Well, I support his decision, but the sadness of losing him, and my fear of death in general made me want him to choose a different path. So, the piece is basically me facing my different ideas on death and using his story to do it. The first movement is my initial reaction, the second movement is the 2 ideas of loss and fear of death, and the third movement is acceptance (as much as I can). The recording is a reading by a professional string-quartet from Iowa.

New Song: Opening Credits

This piece was written in 2006. I created this for the beginning credits of The Widow's Two Daughters. The music, although I haven't seen the film, is supposed to be matching a bouncy ball that is first animated and then eventually comes into lives action for the last 30 seconds until it hits the door of the main character's house. I created a more realistic version (that is a little different because reason cant change tempos, but very similar) in Reason than the crappy midi from finale, but it still sucks compared to a human. Enjoy!
